Ensure Your Life Insurance Policy Is Protected

4 November 2009 No Comment

A lot of people take out life insurance policies, only to promptly forget about the money they are contributing towards it every month. Hopefully they will be able to pay the monthly premium without any hiccups, and then everything runs smoothly along. There are, however, other measures to take to ensure that your beneficiaries will have a hassle free claim process when you pass away.

First of all, you need to ensure that all the details your insurance company have on you are correct and up to date. All the information should be viable and up to date at all times. Many people forget to update their address and contact numbers with their insurance company, even though they pay towards their policy for years. This can be dangerous in the claim process as the insurance company needs to have all facts down correctly for a hassle free claim! Call your insurance broker once or twice a year and cross check the data that they have on you. Call them immediately if you move house or you decide to change your beneficiaries.

Writing up a will is one of the best things you can do to protect your life insurance policy. A will is an official legal witnessed letter stipulating your heirs and what you would like done with any monies left behind when you are gone. You would already have specified who your beneficiaries are, but it is always better to have back up on this, especially if any of your beneficiaries are minors. You can specify in your will how you want the money to be divided and under what guidance or trust. If you have very young children when you take out the policy, you can put down legal guardians of the money for them on your will. Alternatively, you may be more comfortable stipulating in your will that the money should be put in a trust until the children are of a certain age!

Lastly, one of the most important things you can do for your policy is to ensure that someone knows about it. Many people take out a life insurance policy and make the mistake of failing to inform anyone. Tell a close, trusted family member that you have a life insurance policy. Give them your policy number so that they can assist in the claim process for your beneficiaries when you are gone. Alternatively, many people like to leave the information with their lawyer, so that the claim process can be handled by them. Keep all your insurance policy documents somewhere safe, with all the regular updated statements. Inform your lawyer or a trusted person of where to access this when the time comes.
